Jacob Lawrence was an American painter who lived from 1917-2000. Lawrence was an African-American artist whose best-known body of work was the "Migration Series," which dealt with the theme of the migration of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North after World War I. He was a significant figure in 20th Century art and his work has been collected by many important museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Phillips Collection, and the Brooklyn Museum. In addition, this very painting depicted here, The Builders, is on display at the White House!
