"The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity." - Alberto Giacometti

Freeman Alley is a small and short alley off of Rivingston Street between Chrystie Street and the Bowery on the Lower East Side of NYC. We happened upon Freeman Alley as we were visiting art galleries throughout the Lower East Side, and found that Freeman Alley almost serves as a gallery of its own for street art and graffiti.

Pictured above one can see the entrance to Freeman Alley as seen from Rivington Street at left, and then a view down the alley from the entrance to the alley at right. Let's now go in and take a look at some of the street art that we saw in March 2011.

We're not quite sure of the meaning of the horse labeled "Dr. Za" with the caption: "her glory always reinstated," shown at left. And then we have "Shazam," at right, who declares "all text is guaranteed 100% Halal," which means the graffiti artist is claiming to writing text that is legal according to Islamic law, despite the illegality of doing graffiti in NYC. Below left we have two pasted prints titled "The Fox," and at right, some stenciled graffiti that was spray painted on the wall.

Above, an unusual photographic diptych with a spray painted frame around it; below, 3 examples of multiple artists tagging and placing stickers and other forms of graffiti all on top of each other.
