"The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity." - Alberto Giacometti

Willem de Kooning was a Dutch-born American artist who lived from 1904-1997. By the late 1940's and early 1950's, he was painting in a style that became known as Abstract Expressionism, or Action Painting, and he was part of a group of artists in New York that became known as the "New York School." This group included notable artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Franz Kline, and Robert Motherwell, among others. Below is a nice slideshow featuring de Kooning's work over the years.
