Lost love at Astor Place

I was in NYC last Sunday night, and as I went down to the Astor Place subway station to take the train uptown, I saw this solitary rose placed across the middle of the empty bench in an almost empty station. This could be an interesting starting point for a short story, don’t you think? Did a relationship end here? Did an attempt at reconciliation between a couple go off the rails here? It makes me think of the quote from Alfred Lord Tennyson, “…‘tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.”
