I think it might be fair to say that Patrick Nagel’s art became an iconic look reflective of the 1980s, perhaps made so by the fact that one of his images was on the cover of Duran Duran’s 1982 album “Rio,” pictured below right. The popularity of Duran Duran certainly drove interest in Nagel’s work, and his style reflects some of the fashion styles of the 1980s.

At any rate, all this comes up because I just saw that Heritage Auctions recently sold the Patrick Nagel painting “Seductive Female in Profile” (below left) on May 12th for $125,000. I’m having a hard time finding auction records for Patrick Nagel’s work, but my guess is that this is on the high end for his work. Nagel (1945-1984) was primarily known as an illustrator as opposed to a painter, but this particular piece is a 48 x 40″ acrylic on canvas, which may explain the higher price compared to what his prints might sell for.

I just thought it was interesting that Heritage Auctions would feature this image in a recent ad, as I hadn’t seen much of Patrick Nagel’s work out in the public eye for a long time.
