Alvin Ailey (1931-1989) was one of the most important dancer/choreographers of the 20th Century. He began studying dance in 1949 and developed a performance style that suited his athletic body. Ailey started his own dance theater company, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, in 1958. They performed modern dance classics and as well as new works created by Ailey and other young artists. He began a new era of dance performance devoted to African-American themes.
